Selecting Music Recording and Mixing Software You can turn your PC into a digital music studio with one of a growing selection of tools designed to help you make sweet music.
Look for these features when selecting recording software:
- Detailed manual, tutorials, and/or customer support
- A project wizard or similar tool to help you choose from, use, and manipulate an array of prerecorded drum tracks, loops, and backing tracks
- Multi-track audio and MIDI capability – usually, the more tracks, the better
- Built-in time keeping – a digital metronome
- Easy plug, play, and feedback – you should plug in your instrument, click “record,” and get clear visual feedback as you play
- An icon-based graphical user interface (GUI) to help you arrange, edit, mix, and remix your music
- Tools to help you create and even print musical notations, cut from and add to your music, speed it up or slow it down, repeat (loop) sections, export the results in a variety of formats, and burn your tracks to CDs or DVDs
(Please note this guide is only an introductory overview. Because digital studio applications vary widely in format and methodology, follow the manufacturer’s instruction manuals and tutorials for your equipment and software to achieve the best results.)
